Monday 12 December 2011 - Survey suggests Tokyo is most expensive city for expats

Tokyo is the most expensive place for expats to live in the world followed by Oslo and Geneva, according to a new survey.

It also shows that Singapore has leapfrogged rival regional financial centre Hong Kong for the first time as one of the most expensive places for expats. It is now the sixth costliest city in Asia, up two notches from a year ago. Hong Kong, in contrast, fell to ninth from sixth and now ranks behind Beijing and Shanghai in terms of cost.

Tuesday 1 November 2011 - Daily aspirin 'blocks bowel cancer'

A daily dose of aspirin should be given to people at high risk of bowel cancer, say scientists. Two pills a day for two years reduced the incidence of bowel cancer by 63% in a group of 861 at-risk patients.

The study was conducted on 861 patients with Lynch syndrome, which affects one in every 1,000 people.

Thursday 22 September 2011 - Malaria vaccine trial raises hope

Expatriates in malaria hotspots will be interested to read that researchers are to expand a clinical trial of a new malaria vaccine after promising results in a preliminary study in Burkina Faso.

The trial was designed to test safety, but researchers found that vaccinated children had high levels of protection. Described as a "most encouraging" result, a larger study involving 800 children is now to take place in Mali.

Researchers say just nine of 137 developing countries will achieve ambitious targets to improve the health of women and children.

The analysis in The Lancet updates previous estimates of progress on the fourth and fifth Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The experts predict that no country in sub-Saharan Africa will meet the goals to dramatically reduce deaths by 2015.

Friday 19 August 2011 - Three cancers share genetic link

A gene has been linked to at least three cancers in different tissues in the body, US researchers say.

Their findings, reported in the journal Science, showed a fifth of melanomas (skin cancer), Ewing's sarcomas (bone) and glioblastomas (brain) had a defective copy of the gene STAG2.

It controls the way genetic material is divided between cells.

Research from Taiwan suggests, Just 15 minutes of exercise a day can boost life expectancy by three years and cut death risk by 14%.

Meanwhile, work in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests a couch potato lifestyle with six hours of TV a day cuts lifespan by five years.

An "electronic tattoo" could herald a revolution in the way patients are monitored say US scientists.

The sensor attaches to human skin just like a temporary tattoo and can move, wrinkle and stretch without breaking. Researchers hope it could replace bulky equipment currently used in hospitals.
