International Expatriate NewsWednesday 1 February 2012 - 273 expat workers deported on health groundsThe Sharjah Municipality’s (SM) Public Health Clinic was instrumental in deporting 273 expatriate workers last year (2011) due to health problems, according to Dr Rasha Ahmed Al Qassimi, assistant director general for Health, Environment and Quality at the municipality.
The municipality conducted more than 15,000 inspection campaigns last year to make sure that health standards of workers were properly maintained. The health clinic received more than 1,63,000 requests last year for health tests to obtain medical certificates and municipal health cards, a spokesperson revealed.
“The Public Health Clinic plays an active role to ensure the safety of workers in different establishments through medical examinations and tests before granting a card and medical certificate so that they can work without any negative impact on human health and safety,” they said.
Persons suffering from infectious diseases face necessary legal action with the assistance of others to prevent them from doing any activity. they said that 273 such persons were deported last year.
The health control division of the municipality conducted more than 15,000 inspection campaigns of shops and establishments, as laundry and salons, to ensure their commitment to rules on public health.
The Department of Public Health offers many services to clients in addition to supervision and inspection of facilities to follow rules and the implementation of sanitary measures to preserve public health and safety of public, they added.
According to the spokesperson, the clinic and its subsidiaries issued 13,825 certificates for medical cards and occupational health of workers in various establishments that require special medical fitness.
There was an increase of 10 per cent in such tests in 2011, compared to the figure of 2010, in the category of workers in salons for women and men and others. The public health clinic is committed to providing a variety of services to protect people from diseases that pose a threat to public health, they noted.
Medical examinations are done annually for workers in the food industry, men’s and women’s salons, school and KG employees, centres of fitness and bodybuilding and beauty parlours, clothing stores and other professionals who have a direct contact with people. These employees are issued health cards that ensure that they are free from diseases.
