Expat News Round up:
. Expats face confusing new law - Expatriates living in Turkey scrambled last week to try to fulfill a new requirement that foreign residents register and pay for national health insurance. Confused Americans and Britons flooded their consulates in Istanbul with phone calls and e-mails, struggling to learn how to register, or whether they might be exempt if already covered by their own insurer. . Expat warning from HMRC - (HMRC) warn expatriates to be on their guard against falling victim to ‘phishing' emails sent out by fraudsters in the run-up to the self-assessment deadline of 31 January. . Shanghai delays expat insurance payments - Shanghai could be delaying the introduction of a controversial new insurance scheme to appease foreign workers and businesses, local reports suggest. . Would-be expats warned of recruitment scams - Australia’s resources boom has led to a serious skills shortage, particularly in Queensland and Western Australia, but experts say that jobhunters should be wary of agencies claiming they can find them employment in the sector. . Are employers "faling to protect" staff abroad - A new survey has revealed a serious lack of awareness among companies of their duties towards staff on international assignments. The BRIC states – Brazil, Russia, India and China – are all high in a list of potentially hazardous countries.
Also in the news The results of HSBC’s 2011 Expat Explorer Survey are out and Belgium placed #1 for expat healthcare, followed by Germany and France. The survey involved 3,385 expats living in more than 100 countries. In terms of healthcare, enough data was gathered to rank 31 countries.
